This next-generation stress map for North America provides the continent’s first quantitative picture of the relative principal stress magnitudes, which define the style of faulting, as well as improved density of maximum horizontal principal stress (SHmax) orientations. Together they show multiscale variability of the stress field across the continent. Relative stress magnitudes (style of faulting) are depicted using Simpson’s (1997, JGR) Aphi parameter.
