<image:title>Images - Redbeds above the basal unconformity</image:title>
<image:caption>Redbed conglomerates sitting just above the unconformity at the top of the Paleozoic succession, north of Cedar Ridge, Huntington Valley, Nevada. These rocks lack Cenozoic volcanic detritus and their youngest zircon are Triassic in age. The depositional age is probably late Cretaceous or early Cenozoic, but it's uncertain. This is the record of what was sitting at the earth's surface following Mesozoic, Sevier-era shortening. It's overlain by the Eocene Elko Formation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Figure 5. Histogram showing the total length of fault segments associated (black) and not associated (gray) with earthquakes. Note that non-seismogenic faults much more commonly experienced little or no fluid pressure increase. (It is not surprising that many fault segments would not produce earthquakes even at increased fluid pressures, since a fault also needs to be oriented properly with respect to the stress field to fail.) In contrast, seismogenic faults were all associated with some pore pressure increase, though the magnitude of the increase was generally modest spanned a significant range (as expected for faults with different but generally favorable orientations and diverse histories). The figure shows that earthquakes usually occurred in or near areas with the highest injected water volumes (and the highest increase in pore pressure), but many areas with elevated pore pressures experienced little or no seismicity, and some earthquake clusters occurred in areas with quite small increases in pore pressure. <image:caption>Figure 3. The earthquake occurred on a ~E–W-striking, previously unknown normal fault, consistent with stress mapping (Lund Snee & Zoback, 2016, 2018, 2020) that indicates a mostly normal faulting stress field with maximum horizontal principal stress (SHmax) oriented ~E–W. Focal mechanisms are from Saint Louis University (SLU), except for the M5.0, which is from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS basement domain boundary is from Lund et al. (2015), and the Grenville orogenic front is from Thomas (2006).</image:caption>

Earthquake magnitudes increased early this year leading up to the MW5.0 mainshock. The earthquake catalog shown here is from TexNet, which reported a lower ML4.6 for the mainshock.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As part of a course in earthquake seismology, I explored applications of the virtual seismometer method (VSM), also called inter-source seismic interferometry. This promising technique, introduced by Curtis et al. (2009), allows geoscientists to find the Green function between nearby earthquakes by estimating the response that would be detected at one earthquake location if it were a seismometer observing the others. I wrote this term paper to report the theory, historical development, and range of possible applications for this new technique, which I hope will gain broader use in the near future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Resources - Predicting overpressure with basin modeling</image:title>
<image:caption>Accurate predictions of porosity and pore pressure in buried sedimentary formations are of great importance for oil and gas exploration and production, and for drilling safety. However, these values are notoriously difficult to estimate before drilling a well, especially if the rocks have experienced a complex geologic history. Here I use existing basin and petroleum system modeling (BPSM) software to model these properties in a hypothetical reservoir. This term paper reports the results of my analysis and may be of interest to anyone interested in predicting pore pressure and porosity in the subsurface.</image:caption>
